Bee (Apoidea) community response to perennial grass treatments managed for livestock production and conservation

چکیده

• Bee richness and abundance was higher in native grass pastures without cattle. Perennial grasses may provide some forage resources for bees. Honey bees were collected more commonly non-native pastures. Land sharing/sparing with perennial cattle can be ecologically positive. Most grasslands world-wide have been converted into various row crops agriculture pasture livestock foraging. This conversion has likely disrupted arthropod communities, including pollinating bee communities. Pollinating decline recent decades much of this attributed to intensive agricultural practices. Native warm-season promoted as alternatives [e.g., bermudagrass ( Cynodon dactylon )] beef production systems. Reestablishing an opportunity land-sharing where enable conservation practices that potentially enhance biodiversity. Therefore, such growing minimize community disruption should considered. We used colored pan traps collect four treatments plantings associated operational during 2011−2012. The were: (1) mix Bermuda tall fescue Schedonorus arundinaceus ) grazed cattle; (2) monocultures Indiangrass Sorghastrum nutans (3) polyculture [(Indiangrass, little bluestem Schizachyrium scoparium ), big Andropogon gerardii (4) generally documented greater abundances compared exotic treatments; however, treatment-level differences genera- or species-dependent. Lack grazing the mixture treatment did result taxa Our results support conception potential attract numerous, beneficial species pollen rewards suitable nesting substrate using a friendly surrogate promote pollination services diversity lands.

Visitation by wild and managed bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) to eastern U.S. native plants for use in conservation programs.

Addition of floral resources to agricultural field margins has been shown to increase abundance of beneficial insects in crop fields, but most plants recommended for this use are non-native annuals. Native perennial plants with different bloom periods can provide floral resources for bees throughout the growing season for use in pollinator conservation projects. To identify the most suitable pl...

Water supply changes N and P conservation in a perennial grass Leymus chinensis.

Changes in precipitation can influence soil water and nutrient availability, and thus affect plant nutrient conservation strategies. Better understanding of how nutrient conservation changes with variations in water availability is crucial for predicting the potential influence of global climate change on plant nutrient-use strategy. Here, green-leaf nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentratio...

Perennial Crops for Bio-fuels and Conservation

Perennial woody crops have the potential to contribute significantly to the production of bio-fuels while simultaneously helping to provide a wide range of conservation benefits. Among these benefits are increased biological diversity in the landscape, conservation of soil and water resources, maintenance of forest ecosystem productivity and health, contribution to the global carbon cycle, and ...

Response of the Apoidea to Fungal Infections

The survival of the bee depends on the successful defense against microbial invaders, parasites and predators. The honey bee immune system, like other species of holometabolous insects, depends on two main categories of defense reactions: the cellmediated responses such as phagocytosis and encapsulation of foreign objects and cell-free defense mechanisms represented by the antimicrobial immune ...

Montane meadow plant community response to livestock grazing.

We examined long-term (10 years) meadow plant community responses to (1) livestock grazing under riparian grazing utilization limits; (2) suspension of livestock grazing; and (3) meadow site wetness and precipitation on the Inyo National Forest, California. Observed trends in meadow plant species richness, diversity, and frequency of soil stabilizing species were not significantly different bet...
